About Butler Koshland Fellowships

Butler Koshland Fellowships is a unique program designed to pass on public service leadership skills and legacy. Our model is simple and personal—we ask extraordinary leaders to mentor an emerging leader. Each mentor and fellow pair work closely together on a project for one year, during which time we fund the fellow’s salary. The fellow is also integrated into and supported by a community of Butler Koshland fellows and mentors—past, current, and future—doing important work for the common good.  To learn more about Butler Koshland Fellowships, please visit our website: www.bkfellowships.org

FELLOWSHIP DESCRIPTION

Beginning in January 2014, the fellow would work under the direction and guidance of Esta Soler as a Butler Koshland Fellow. In this role, the fellow will support the executive-level goals of Futures Without Violence. The fellow will experience the array of duties and responsibilities required to successfully lead a nonprofit organization in today’s world. This is an exceptional opportunity for someone to participate at the management level of a major nonprofit organization during an especially exciting period of expansion and possibility.

Representative projects and learning opportunities may include:

Development: The development team at Futures Without Violence has worked hard to cultivate relationships with foundations and individual donors. While very successful, Futures Without Violence believes that it could further identify and activate even more like-minded individuals who would welcome the opportunity to contribute to such an important cause. As part of this initiative, the fellow will have the opportunity to learn first-hand from a team of expert fundraisers while working closely with Esta to expand their donor base by devising strategy around major donor fundraising from individuals.

Policy: Futures Without Violence has been at the forefront of major legislative action and change around issues of violence against women. Through an active advocacy team in Washington, DC, Futures Without Violence maintains strong relationships with legislative offices and federal government agencies. The fellow will contribute to Esta’s knowledge of key legislative action by:

  • Drafting policy and organizational documents for legislative visits,
  • Participating in DC-based events such as legislative hearings and policy briefings,
  • Monitoring federal policy, and
  • Outreaching to partner organizations.

Communications: In order to share Futures Without Violence’s mission of creating a future free of violence for all with new audiences while also deepening its relationship with current stakeholders, the fellow will participate in social media strategy and content production. The fellow will support an effective and creative organizational use of social media by: exploring outlets such as LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Google+; developing and executing strategies to maximize online presence; and streamlining processes for sharing organizational updates. The fellow will work with the communications team to find relevant and newsworthy gender-based violence content to utilize across social media platforms, while also helping to build and organize the database of images used to accompany social media and website content.
